Hostal Mirtha

My review: Firstly, this was booked for me by an excellent casa owner in Trinidad and Punta Gorda was recommended as opposed to a central, town casa and I agreed. I received a warm welcome from Mirtha, her grandson Jorge and her daughter in law Meran. Mirtha's casa has been her home since 1947 and she is unquestionably the matriarch and rightly so. Punta Gorda is evocative of Florida (nay Cuba) in the 1940's & 50's, different to anywhere else I stayed on the island. The house is stylish, light and immaculately kept.
How was your room?: My upstairs room had a double and single bed with a/c. Access to my private bathroom was through a small private lobby with my personal stocked (water & beer) fridge. The bathroom was baby blue with a part sunken bath, efficient shower and lovely towels. From the lobby, through a very secure door, was the terrace providing a great view of the ocean and surrounds. It was a very nice quiet room and for once, I wasn't woken by a rooster, shouting or any other noise.
How was the food they offer?: A well set table is a pleasure to sit at. Breakfast with freshly squeezed guava or pineapple juice, eggs any style, ham, cheese, breads, honey, tea or coffee, prepared and served by the lovely Arais. 5CUC.
I had dinner at the casa 3 nights, Everyday, Mirtha asked me what I would like to eat and everything was delicious - the best dinner in any casa I stayed at - and I stayed in 7 throughout Cuba. Everything freshly cooked and served by the equally lovely Zeomaria. Seriously delicious homemade black bean soup, chicken, fish, shrimp, rice, vegetables and salads, fruits - 10CUC or 12CUC incl. lobster. Beer 2CUC. Water 1CUC.
Other services they offer: I stayed for 4 nights and was very happy here. One evening, I saw a toad or frog hop into my room, but following an exhaustive search by me and Jorge, there was so sign of it. As I was worried it might find me in the night (!) Mirtha offered me another room for that night and I was to the downstairs room with private entrance. It was actually two intercommunicating (double bed) rooms and a tiny shower room. The suite had it's own large stocked fridge and the whole place was immaculate. There was no extra charge for this courtesy to me. And no, we never found the frog!
Arais did some laundry for me and the charge was 1CUC - amazing!
Other comments: I think Meran was in charge of housekeeping everyday - she didn't speak as much English as Mirtha or Jorge but she had a great sense of humour. Mirtha's family all live with her at the casa. It is their home and I was made very welcome. Mirtha commands respect and in turn, she respects her guests. I would say she treats people the way they treat her, her family and her home. She definitely knows how she likes things! Mirtha is a highly intelligent, articulate lady and very interesting to talk to as she speaks excellent English. The casa is next door to the (expensive!) Casa Azul - bright blue, you can't miss it. Next door to that is a 'country club' where for a modest fee, you can swim, sunbathe (not much shade), eat and drink. At the very end of Punta Gorda is a very small beach but I didn't use it. The resident cat, dog & parrot are not allowed in the house. Taxi to town is 2-3CUC takes 5mins. Excellent local restaurant nearby, also shop for drinks etc.

I paid 156 CUC for 3 nights including breakfast for a superior room

Hostal Mirtha

My review: I made a booking well in advance for a superior room. When I arrived the family showed us a terrible room in the back part of the house on the ground floor, close to the home of their dog. They told us: The superior room we had booked is damaged. I wanted to see the damaged room but the family refused.
We think that the family gave the room to other persons and thought we would take the terrible room.
We did not stay in Hostal Mirtha and were rather angry.
I cannot recommend the casa
How was your room?: terrible

I paid 35 CUC per night

Mirtha Hostal

My review: Steer clear. We arrived late at night without a booking to be told it was 25 CUC a night. The rapacious grandma, Mirtha, announced the day beore we checked out that price was 35 CUC and that breakfast was extra at 5 CUC per person. I was reluctant to argue but vowed I´d make my first ever posting on a travel site about Mirtha hostal. Grandma also every day demanded to know if we would be eating there that evening. We have finished three weeks touring Cuba and of course the island is poor and people want money but Grandma Mirtha is a wolf in sheep´s clothing. Deary casa particualr too and mosy infested in the pokey room next to the shower. You have been warned!

Casa Hostal Mirtha

My review: I have mixed reviews about this place. The location, accommodations and food at this place are great and the fact that the house overlooks the ocean is wonderful. However, Mirtha and her family were not very helpful in terms of giving us tips on where to go abouts in the city. I found them rather standoffish. But if you're simply looking for a place to stay overnight and don't really mind the customer service then by all means, casa mirtha is great. The family on the other hand weren't particularly the friendliest of hosts.
