Casa Lachi y Yeni

Casa Lachi y Yeni
My review: We were excited about our stay at Lachi y Yeni's - it looked great online. Unfortunately, we were only there for about 2 minutes. Lachi apologetically told us that the previous guests had just decided to extend their stay for a month. I suppose that's a pretty good verdict on Lachi and Yeni's casa!
While it was a bit disappointing, I understand it happens that way a lot and the reasons why. Anyway, Lachi and Yeni referred us to their next-door neighbour at no. 63. All good, we thought. But no.
Do not stay at 63 if Lachi and Yeni are full. Yes, they are also licenced, but it's a bit of a mystery to me how, as neither of the main requirements for renting to tourists (air-conditioning, hot water shower) were met. We showered out of a bucket between the two of us. I'm used to camping, so it was no big deal, but it was disappointing they still insisted on charging us the standard 30 CUC for the night. The room smelled like petrol and had no window. The guava batido served with breakfast was off. At no stage did they engage in conversation in either language, or even tell us their names. We were treated like an income source, pure and simple.
In short, easily the worst casa I've ever stayed in. We upped sticks to Vedado the next day.

Casa Lachi y Yeni
My review:
While walking along the sea front Malecon I came across Lachi and Yeni's house. They have a sign noting they are a licensed Casa particular. I knocked on the door and Yeni greeted me, speaking good English and showed me the two rooms she rented out. They were both immaculacy clean with on suites and essential air conditioning.
As I was not happy with the apartment I was staying in I reserved a room with Yeni and moved there two days later. I had a fabulous time at my new accommodation and after a few days felt like part of the family. Yeni would cook breakfast and dinner if required and her black beans were the best I had in Havana.
It's just a short walk to Havana Vieja, the Revolution Museum, etc and there is a good choice of restaurants near too. Or you can just sit on the sea wall and watch the local fisherman with a cold beer.
I can thoroughly recommended this busy house if you want to immerse your self in authentic Cuban life.
I have made new friends in Havana and am sure you will too.
