Casa DorisMy review: Our most-gracious hosts, Carlos and Doris, welcomed us for our final five days in Havana to this conveniently-located Casa, within walking distance to Vedado main street, 23rd/Rampa, and close to primary cross-town streets where you can catch Cuban Colectivo taxis (old cars) for 1$CUC/person to Old Havana. Later at night a formal taxi can be found for 7-10CUC between Vedado and Old Havana. Vedado is a comfortable residential neighbourhood with restaurant options close by and two ‘Cuban Jazz’ clubs, La Zorra y el Cuervo (MOST HIGHLY recommended!) and The Jazz Café. How was your room?: Our 3rd floor room was exactly as described on CubaJunky, with as much sunshine as you wish through shuttered windows and balcony doors, and a comfy bed for a quiet & cozy sleep.
Other services they offer: Beyond always being more than willing to provide info, Carlos was able to find us the perfect car & driver for our reasonably-priced & highly comfortable 1.5hr trip to Varadero for our flight home, instead of taking the 3 hr bus ride which we had done 16 days earlier on arrival. Other comments: In addition to the small balcony off this great 3rd fl room, the rooftop terrace is a dynamite bonus with much room for relaxing or enjoying sunsets! Carlos & Doris, we will return! Casa DorisMy review: Carlos and Doris are a wonderful couple, extremely welcoming and helpful, and their house is beautiful, serene, and marvellously located. I wouldn't have stayed anywhere else! The casa is in a fantastic location in Vedado, just one block down from the central Calle 23. From there, you can catch an old '50s car into La Habana Vieja for 50 cents, which is an experience in itself. Vedado itself is a beautiful, quiet, and safe area, with lots going on on the Calle 23, including cinemas, restaurants, bars and parks. A real safe haven from the bustling and crowded Habana Vieja! Would really recommend Casa Doris as a base for exploring the city, as you can return home to a spacious and cool room with double bed and a great en-suite bathroom to rest. You also have your own balcony looking onto the street from the room. Carlos and Doris also have a terrace upstairs on the roof, which they have recently decorated with a new shade from the summer sun, bespoke wooden furniture from their hometown, and the oh-so-Cuban cast-iron rocking chairs. The views from there are beautiful, and it's a great place to relax. Doris and Carlos are wonderful hosts - they are lively, friendly, intelligent, relaxed, welcoming, and above all, helpful. If ever you have any questions or worries, they go out of their way to help you out. They also recommend good places to eat and fun things to do locally (try El Balcon about a 15 minute walk away from their house!). One more thing that stands out for me out of my entire trip round Cuba was that Doris and Carlos (1) served the best breakfast, with a generous and delicious platter of fresh fruit, freshly made fruit juice, freshly brewed coffee, and eggs to your liking, and (2) they give you treated water to drink for free. In all of the other casas I stayed in in Cuba (Santa Clara, Trinidad, Ciego de Avila, Moron) they provided you with bottled water, which they then added to the bill at the end. Carlos and Doris provide you with safe water to drink for no extra price, which is extremely kind of them. How was your room?: The room was great! Usually it only has a double bed, but as we were travelling in a group of 3, Carlos and Doris put in an extra single bed, which was extremely comfortable. There is a balcony facing the calm street with two cast-iron seats to relax in. There is also a new and very clean en-suite bathroom with a shower. The room is also equipped with a TV, a fan, an air conditioning unit and a fridge. May 9 2015

My review: We really enjoyed staying av Doris and Carlos house! Most of the time we spent with Doris since Carlos was away. Last night we had dinner with Doris and Carlos at our favorite restaurant, and the coming morning we were invited to a sunday family breakfast together with them! Close to the casa there's a "local linea" with old cars driving as taxis, a nice and cheap way to get into the center. One of the best memories from our travel! How was your room?: Big, clean, bright, a balcony with a wiew to the street, nice and clean bathroom How was the food they offer?: very nice! Other services they offer: Laundry, guiding, telephonecalls March 22 2015 Casa DorisMy review: Doris and Carlos have a fantastic house in Vedado--very close to many interesting places in Havana, including the very chic arts building, Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC), that is only a short walk from their house (I highly recommend going to FAC if you are thinking of places to go in Havana, especially if you like visual art, film, concerts, etc.). Doris and Carlos have everything you need, and more! They are fantastic hosts--for example, Doris very kindly served me Cuban coffee upon my arrival and showed me around her rooftop patio (wow what a beautiful view!). I was only in Havana for a few days but I had some troubles--for example, my credit card was eaten by a bank machine when I arrived and I had to wait a day to obtain more cash. Doris and Carlos were very patient and so helpful--I really appreciated their help. It also helps that Carlos knows conversational English, so if it's your first time in Havana and you don't know a lot of Spanish but you speak English then you'll be very comfortable at this house. Truly one of my favourite places I've stayed in Cuba (I've also been to Sancti Spiritus, Camaguey, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, Santa Clara, etc...). I wish I could have stayed longer with Doris and Carlos! Well, I know that when I return to Havana I will stay there again. How was your room?: Amazing! My room was very spacious with a big bed (perfect for a couple). There was a balcony, washroom, hot shower, refrigerator, extra tables, TV, and more. I actually found the street to be very quiet compared to other cities in Cuba. How was the food they offer?: So delicious--Doris served me one of the best breakfasts I've had in Cuba: lots of fruit and bread, Cuban coffee, fresh juice, eggs and meat. Other services they offer: I cannot emphasize enough how kind they are! On my last day in Havana I had to wake up at 4:30am to get to the Viazul bus station, so they woke up too, made breakfast and Carlos drove me to the station. I really did not want to bother them but they offered to help me. Muchas gracias!!
March 20 2015 Casa DorisMy review: La casa en sí, es realmente hermosa hasta el más minimo detalle. La decoración es preciosa, todo esta muy limpio y en excelentes condiciones. Cuenta con un living para estar, un comedor donde se desayuna y una terraza muy linda, que cuenta con sillas, una mesa y una barra muy bonitas y desde donde se puede observar la ciudad. How was your room?: La habitación cuenta con una cama muy cómoda, televisor, un baño con agua caliente todo el día, y un hermoso balcón desde donde se ve una de las calles del Vedado How was the food they offer?: El desayuno es espectacular: fruta fresca y diversa (hasta 6 distintos tipos de fruta) pan, manteca, huevos (que los servían de muchas maneras) y algo de carne.
Other services they offer: Más allá de todas las comodidades que nos brindaron, nos hicieron recomendaciones y nos dieron consejos que fueron trascendentales en nuestro viaje. Gracias a esos consejos comimos en restaurantes desde económicos hasta restaurantes de categoría, que siempre recomendaban de acuerdo a nuestros intereses. Other comments: Estuvimos con mi pareja en la casa 4 días y quedamos tan encantados que volvimos los 4 últimos días de nuestro viaje. Cuba fue un viaje hermoso para nosotros, y lo fue en gran parte por Doris y Carlos. Nos hemos sentido cómodos, acompañados, guíados y por sobre todo queridos por ellos. Por esas razones y otras que tal vez me olvide, fue en la casa de Doris el lugar en donde nos sentimos como en casa. March 7 2015 Casa DorisMy review: My daughter and I, stayed at Casa Doris for three nights.Carlos and Doris were very gracious hosts, and very helpful in directing us to nearby good restaurants, the incredible Art Factory and explained how the Collectivo Taxis worked. It is a 15 minute ride to Old Havana and has everything you need handy.We were very happy with our stay and would stay again with Doris and Carlos if we return to Havana. How was your room?: The room was well furnished, with a fridge, a double bed and single bed and its own bathroom. Everything was spotless, and cosy. The room also had a small balcony looking onto the street. The windows are different than windows on the North American continent, and sounds travel, and the Cuban people are hard working people who start early, my earplugs were very handy. How was the food they offer?: Doris fixed us a wonderful breakfast of fresh, delicious fruits, savoury fruit juices, and excellent coffee, fabulous tasting eggs, bread and butter. Doris chatted with us while we ate and told us about her work, her daughter. Other services they offer: Our hosts were very friendly and helpful, the weather turned cold while we were in Havana, and Doris kindly outfitted us with warm wool shawls. CArlos also was kind enough to drop us off on his way to a meeting to the bus depot to buy tickets to another destination. |
