Casa Pablo Havana
My review: We found this Casa in the Lonely Planet, and were not disappointed with the casa itself, the lovely original frescos, and the fantastic location (for some reason, we had way less hassling when entering the Plaza Viejo area from this side of town than from the north). I also really liked the 2nd story terrace with a view of Calle Compostela. There's also a very interesting mix of old ruins in the process of being restored, and more recently restored buildings.
Pablo y Lidia were very helpful and went out of their way to help us with our plans. The food and coffee were good, and the rooms were adequate. Someone always staffed the door to ensure we could come and go as we pleased.
One word of caution for female travelers- Pablo, although elderly and probably harmless, is a little too touchy-feely for my taste. I found him initially very charming, but soon found myself the unwanting recipient of too-friendly pats on the back, rubs on the hand, etc. He would do this when my husband was not present, then would stop suddenly when my husband entered the room. It was a bit awkward, and my Spanish was not good enough to set boundaries while at the same time not offending the host. By contrast, Lidia was a total sweetheart and went out of her way to help us make arrangements for our plans.
In summary, I'd avoid this place if you are a female solo traveler, but it's probably fine in mixed company.
Casa specifics: English speaking, Quiet, Elegant, Comfortable, Cozy, Romantic, Charming, Beautiful, Safe, Patio

How was your room?: The room was adequate. No windows, but tall ceilings and good ventilation with fans. Plenty of storage, a queen bed with an extra twin.
How was the food they offer?: Good, but simple. Plentiful fruit, great coffee, eggs and bread for breakfast, standard Cuban fare.
Other services they offer: They will call on your behalf for reservations, taxi services, etc.

Casa Pablo Rodriguez
My review: The casa is well located, just about a few minutes from Obispo and also a few blocks from Plaza Vieja.
Friendly old people, room is small, but clean and has a safe. In Lonely Planet is this casa listed, but it says room with en-suite bath. But the bathroom is separate and you have to share. That's the only thing we didn't like. The breakfast was OK for 3CUC pp.
Taxi brought us till the casa and the son in law is a taxidriver and brought us back to the airport.
Casa specifics: Quiet, Colonial, Safe
Amenities: Safety box, Airconditioning, Breakfast service, Extra bed available

Casa Pablo
Review
If you want a guesthouse instead of a casa particular this is your place.
Impersonal, the host are just not bothered about their guests ( unlike many other houses).
Location is very good but there is other houses arround that are better.
Casa specifics: Comfortable, Safe
Amenities: Safety box, Balcony, Ceiling fan
How was your room?: OK, no windows, no a/c.
Not very good
How was the food they offer?: The breakfast was expensive (compared with others in Havana Vieja) and minimalistic.
Other services they offer: Anything you want but be prepared, you will have to pay! Nothing is free in this casa.
For example there is a water filter with fresh water but you have to pay for the right to use it.
Other comments: As I said before if you want to be left alone and have the least relationship with your hosts, this could be a place. we stayed one night and run away! |
