Reviews Casa Refugio de ReyesJune 25 2016 Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: Our final night in Cuba – we flew from Habana to Holguin – internal flight is well worth the experience if you can fit it in, just make sure you tell the taxi driver it's a National flight not an International! We arrived late at night and were met by the kindest people we have come across on the whole island. So welcoming, so warm and just plain kind. Spectacular breakfast, in terms of presentation and the quality of the food. It was plentiful and delicious, we even had yoghurt. Not only that, you can make your own toasted sandwiches for lunch, so we were set up for the day ahead. The room is outside of the main house, in and amongst the garden which gives you total privacy. With it's own TV, a well stocked fridge (ideal especially if you're arriving late at night), AC, a good shower, we were extremely comfortable. Our only complaint is we didn't have enough time there – utterly wonderful. They accommodated for our late arrival and also our late departure the following day, as we left after the usual check out time. Sarah and David arranged for our transfer to the airport, the taxi driver put on English music for us in the car and gave us his business card for when we come back next time – thoughtful, generous, what a way to end our Cuban experience. Honestly one of the nicest casas we stayed in during our time in Cuba. We stayed in a very modern villa separate to the house within the (huge and amazing) garden which meant we had full privacy during our stay but also felt incredibly welcome by the entire family – without a doubt one of the best places we stayed. Thank you! How was your room?: Excellent March 24 2016 Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: It's a cute place with a lot of beautiful plants ans cactus. A good place for relax and read a while ! June 29 2015 CASA REFUGIO DE REYESMy review: I really enjoyed my stay here. Sara and David are the nicest people and made me feel really comfortable, always offering to help. They make really good food too, and the fresh garden mangos are delicious! They were also extremely helpful in taking me in at the start and the end of my stay, as I was not always in Holguin. When I returned to Holguin at the end of my stay, they even waited for me late at night to make sure I safely arrived. The quality and hygiene of the rooms exceeded my expectations, and having tried other casas in other cities, I can safely say that you will not find these standards coupled with the authentic Cuban experience anywhere else! June 15 2015 Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: This is such a lovely place to stay you will not want to leave! Sara and David are great hosts, incredibly helpful, warm and open. We had probably our best breakfast here, and we really enjoyed that they would happy talk to us, so we felt part of their home, rather than passing guests. The loaction is also great as you are not far from the centre of town with restaurants, and markets near by, as well as close to various bus terminals. How was your room?: The room was large, clean and secure. We had our own bathroom, fridge, air conditioning and fans. The place is also very quiet as the rooms are at the back of the courtyard, away from the road. How was the food they offer?: The food was delicous and plentiful. they are incredibly generous with thier breakfasts, and we even had a sangria when we arrived!
Other services they offer: Sara and David were able to help us with where we should visit, recommendations (that were excellent) on who we could stay with. They even called people for us to ensure we had everything in order before we left. Other comments: I couldn't recommend this place more highly - It is a great place to stay and a lovely way to share some time with a fantastic cuban family.
May 23 2015 Refugio de ReyesMy review: When my friend and I were looking for accommodation in Holguin I was so happy to receive a warm and welcoming reply from Sara, she was so helpful that I couldn't wait to get to Cuba. Holguin was a great place to start our travels through Cuba. There are transport links to Santiago and Havana. Buses are a great way to get around. My friend and I took local transport to Baracoa (Sara’s suggestion) and we were so happy that we took her advice. It’s beautiful. Sara and David are really lovely people and their home is warm and welcoming, if you want a relaxed place to start your journey or a comforting place to end it, then book a room at this casa. How was your room?: The rooms are clean, with large beds, a warm shower, cold water in the fridge, air-conditioning - everything we needed. My favourite part of my stay was sitting in the beautiful garden to have breakfast. Sara is a good cook so make sure to eat at the casa. How was the food they offer?: Sara has a lovely eye for detail; she adds little flowers to the wrapped cutlery and she presents the slices of her delicious cakes with spoons full of this wonder fruit jam. We had fresh fruit juice, eggs cooked any way we wanted, a selection of meat – I don’t eat meat, but my friend really enjoyed it – plus I had too much food anyway to fill me up. Due to our travel plans I only got to have breakfast(s) at the casa, on the day we arrived in Cuba and the day that we left, I can't wait to return again (and try some more of Sara's cooking!)
Other services they offer: I'm not sure what additional services Sara and David offer, they arranged for the taxi to pick us up from the airport - that was really helpful - and they gave us fantastic travel tips and contact details. Other comments: Cuba is a fantastic country, with warm and approachable people who love music and enjoy life. If you are looking for an interesting place to travel and you love the journey as much as the destination, then come to Cuba - it's wonderful! March 28 2015
Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: Wir können uns den letzten Bewertungen anschließen! Sara und David sind einfach nett, hilfsbereit und unaufdringlich. How was your room?: Sauber. Super! Bequemes Bett! Traumhaft ruhig! How was the food they offer?: Gut. Other comments: Der Garten ist wunderschön angelegt. Kein Wunder, Sara und David sind Biologen. March 4 2015 Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: We were cycling around the Oriente de Cuba, starting at Holguin and David & Sara kindly agreed to look after our bike bags for us. We stayed with them 28th Jan and 16th & 17th Feb. 2015. They also organised a taxi for us to and from the airport. All the family were pleasant and helpful to us and we enjoyed staying there very much. The garden is very peaceful with lots of trees and plants, and a water feature plus a hammock and tables and chairs, where we ate our meals. Sara is a botanist and David an entomologist. We found both of them very interesting and I enjoyed seeing David's collection of insect photos, some of them very impressive. He must be a very patient man! How was your room?: The en-suite room had only recently been built. A cabin at the back of the garden with it's own patio. A very pretty bedroom with a fridge and side tables and reading lights. Together with the shower room, all we needed. How was the food they offer?: The food was plentiful, well cooked and beautifully presented. Sara is the cook and David apparently adds the artistic flair. Other services they offer: They provided us with a map of Holguin and explained where to find the banks and Cadecas. Your wish is their command! Feb 9 2015 Hostal Refugio de ReyesMy review: I'd like to echo everything else that has been said about this excellent casa and the lovely hosts, Sara and David. I stayed there with my boyfriend for 3 nights in December. It should have been two nights but my boyfriend had to return home to Trinidad due to a sudden family bereavement. Sara and David were so kind to me while I was anxiously awaiting his return, as were Sara's parents. We stayed in the room in the back garden (the mini-apartment upstairs is currently let out on a longer-term rental). The garden itself is very restful and lush and has swinging seats and a hammock to relax in. If the pool is brought back into use (which I think is the intention), the garden willl be an absolute paradise for hot, weary travellers. The room and bathroom are clean and comfortable and are not decorated in that uber-chintzy style so often seen in Cuban casas. There is a constant supply of hot water and the room has a TV and well-stocked fridge. We had a faithful companion in the gentle giant, Albion, the family's beautiful German Shepherd. I agree with others who ate at the casa that the food is of a very high quality and that the portions for both breakfast and dinner are more than generous. I'd definitely stay in this casa again if I needed accommodation in Holguin. Feb 1 2015 Casa Refugio de ReyesMy review: We had a wonderful stay with David and Sara in Holguin. We were on a cycling trip and stayed our first and last nights here, and they kindly kept our bike cases for us while we were travelling. They arranged pickup from the airport, and everything was very well organised - Sara even found maps of other cities for us as we forgot our guide books. The room was lovely with lots of small touches that we didn't see in other casa such as fresh flowers and a menu list with different meal options. There is a lovely garden for you to eat your meals and relax during the day. The food was amazing, with a huge selection of fruit at breakfast and very generous portions. The evening meals were also delicious and Sara made a real effort to make more unusual specialities for us to try. David was also very generous in helping us to prepare our bikes for travel back to Canada by providing cleaning supplies and a hose in the yard. We felt that nothing was too much trouble for them, and they would help us in any way to make our stay more enjoyable and smooth. We can't thank them enough or recommend this casa more highly. Excellent!
